As "Indigenous People" encompasses a multitude of various tribes, customs and languages, and geographically located traditions, this course will examine the impact of stereotypes, misperceptions, and misunderstandings regarding the students and families of CCSD. Educators will develop a critical perspective of contemporary/urban Indigenous voices, informed by real lived experiences and learn ways to interrupt inequitable educational practices.

Teachers will analyze brain research, learn ways to increase math motivation, and develop strategies for increasing students' number sense and understanding. The topics in this class will shift teachers' pedagogical knowledge in mathematics instruction, cultivate culturally responsive education practices, and will support teams in the PLC process.

This course will be a combination of online learning through Youcubed.org and one face-to-face reflection and planning session.This course unpacks the teaching approach that was used in an 18-lesson intervention that raised the achievement of students learning mathematics by the equivalent of 2.7 years of school. In the teaching intervention, Jo Boaler
taught 6/7th graders by giving the students new knowledge of the brain, mindset and mathematics learning and taught through open, creative mathematics.The course includes over 30 videos of the teaching and interviews with students. It also includes interviews with mindset guru Carol Dweck and leading mathematician Steve Strogatz. It consists of short videos interspersed with various thinking tasks—such as reflecting on videos, designing lessons ideas, and discussing ideas with peers in the class—to promote active engagement. The topics in this class will shift teachers' pedagogical knowledge in mathematics instruction, cultivate culturally responsive education practices, and will support teams in PLCs. This course has a prerequisite of course 11170 How to Learn Math for Teachers. If you completed that course prior to 2019, please contact Heather Palumbo to be added to this course. |
